Launched in 2014, the 12+ programmes provides girls with information on sexual reproductive health at an early age, equips them with social, economic and leadership skills, along with career development advice. This government programme targets the most vulnerable 10 – 12 year old girls nationwide, but is implemented by Imbuto Foundation in 10 districts: Burera, Gakenke, Gicumbi, Karongi, Musanze, Ngororero, Nyabihu, Rubavu, Rulindo and Rutsiro.
Through 12+ young girls aged between 10 – 12 receive lessons on self-confidence, nutritional balance, career guidance and the principles of being financially independent and sexual reproductive health knowledge. Young mentors, aged between 18 – 25 years old who are trained to empower the girls in “safe spaces”, conduct these weekly lessons.
17,488 girls have graduated from the 12+ programme.
